International Cooperation Organisation: “Dona Vida” (Donate Life) supports literacy and vocational training campaigns in areas such as handicrafts, sewing, agriculture, etc.
This project is already underway in the Darchula District, where a hundred Nepalese women are already learning to read and write and being trained thanks to scholarships.
In order to understand why Nepalese women's situation is so complex, we have to explain the following to you:
Their life-style is very complicated and is worsened by the chauvinist structure of the society in which women are still considered to be inferior to men and are totally dependent on their husbands.
When a Nepalese women marries, she becomes the servant of her husband's entire family and is totally in charge of running the household. Her opinion is not asked for and the only advantage is achieved by giving her husband a son who will in time bring a new servant-wife into the household to substitute her.
The scant access of Nepalese women to education; approximately 75% of 15-year-old Nepalese girls have never been to school - brings them even closer to a life of dire poverty.
Only 4% of women reach secondary education, compared to around 13% in the case of males.
This is the reason why International Cooperation Organisation: “Dona Vida” (Donate Life) is devoting its efforts to helping Nepalese women, by offering them access to education and vocational training.
